Maybe life is a song but you’re scared to sing along
Until the very ending
Oh, it’s time to let go of everything we used to know
Ideas that strengthen who we’ve been
“Dude, you should totally check out my blog!”
If I were making a list of the things I never in a million years thought I’d ever say, that wouldn’t necessarily be in the top five.
But it would probably be in the top ten. And yet, here we are.
Let’s face it. I’m generally not all that interesting. On purpose. I kind of like my slightly lame, boring life.
Or so I thought.
Turns out I may have a few things to share.
One is a head stuffed full of random song lyrics.
The other is that I’m part of an amazing team. Seriously. They’re AMAZING.
Third, over the course of my career, I’ve trusted that the way everyone else does things is the right way because, well, everyone else does it. Lately, I’ve realized that my blind faith in “that’s the way it’s always been done” has been a big mistake.
From the perspective of an HR professional, I get to be part of a team that’s doing things that I never could have imagined we could do. We’re taking all the processes we were taught, we’re shattering them, and we’re starting over.
We’ve changed how we post jobs, how we interview, how we handle compensation, how we talk about performance, how we communicate, our policies, all of it.
Not so boring after all. And definitely not lame.
Don’t get me wrong. We’re not perfect. We still make mistakes. But we keep trying. We’re employing agile HR, reviewing what we didn’t get quite right the first time and adapting to be better next time.
Together, we’re working to create more than just a group of people who suffer through work at the same company. We’re creating a community with shared values and goals. One that puts people in a position to be their best and add unique value based on their skills. To be great, even if we’re not perfect.
From this, the “Work is a Song” blog is born.
I invite you to share in this journey as we mold our culture into what we dream it can be, a place where people feel they belong, where they can shine, where everyone has a voice that matters, where “moments” are celebrated. Subscribe to this blog so you can sing along with us.
