(High) hopes we have for the future
And our goal’s in sight…
Here’s what we call our golden rule
Have faith in you and the things you do

It’s safe to say I have extremely mixed feelings when a company makes any version of the statement, “We’re a family here.”
On one hand, when people at our organization say it, I’m happy and grateful. I hear that and understand they have a family that supports them and cheers them on. And they experience the same thing in our workplace.
That’s amazing to hear.
One the other hand, I also understand “family” is complicated for many people. For anyone who came from a family where they didn’t feel they belonged, if they didn’t receive encouragement or support, or if they didn’t get to experience unconditional love, “family” isn’t a compliment.
For some, family means unconditional support. For others, it’s a giant billboard that screams “Dysfunction!” I’d guess that for many more, the definition of family falls somewhere in between.
I’ve long searched for a better descriptor than “family” to describe a workplace that provides encouragement, support, belonging, compassion, and indicates someone has your back. But I haven’t found anything quite right yet.
I’m open to suggestions.
In the meantime, just be aware of both perspectives. And, please, think seriously before inserting the word “family” on your website or into your interview process.
